Located just outside Philadelphia, Springfield Country Club in Springfield, PA, is becoming one of the better public courses in the Philadelphia Area. I have played this golf course several times over the past few years and it has continued to improve each year. I hope they continue to provide excellent service and a course in great condition.
Springfield Country Club: The Course
(Sign located at the entrance)
The course is not a long course which provides the golfers with a chance to score. Playing at just 6,018 from the tips, the course layout has OB on many of the holes and forced carry off the tee box or as you approach the green. The rating/slope from the tips is 69/127.
Since I have started playing here 3 years ago, the course has improved dramatically. When I first started playing here the greens were very slow. Now, the greens are very fair. I had several downhill putts that were slippery enough to prevent my birdies.
The fairways are cut and defined more so than when I first got here. When you're in the fairway now, you know it and it's cut very short. They had mowers out on the course while we were out there, something I had not seen before.
(Yardage marker on the tee box of a par 3)
One aspect that impressed me was the yardage marking. Almost every sprinkler head was marked the distance to the green. There were also markings telling you how far to carry or how far until a ravine. It makes life much easier when you know what club to hit or you'll end up in jail.
The Par 3's
The par 71 course has 5 par 3's. The front has 2 and the back has 3.
(Dramatic elevation change on the 14th hole, a par 3 playing 195 from the tips)
All but one of the par 3's have forced carry shots off the tee. The one that doesn't is marked by OB on the right, woods long and high grass to the left. The most challenging of them all is probably the 14th hole. Playing the white tees, it plays at 165 yards with a narrow forced carry and downhill elevation change (see above).
(A par 3 with carry over a pond)
What Else
The course does not have water now so you'll have to buy your own. A bottle of water goes for $2 at the snackbar. They also sell beer, soda, snacks, hotdogs and sandwiches. It's reasonably priced and they offer a small carry cooler to keep the beers cool throughout your round.
(The narrow green on the short 17th. Long is down a hill, short is in a bunker)
The course makes up for being short with plenty of challenges. Whether it's a sharp dogleg, forced carry, or blind shot, they have plenty of trouble if you hit an errant tee shot.

What Does WAM Think?
This is a fun public course and priced reasonably. We paid $48 for a morning weekday tee time. Want to save money? You can save $12 with the Tee Time Golf Pass. If you're looking for a country club, this is not it. If you're looking for a public course in good shape and worth the money you'll pay, you will have not problem playing here. I'm sure I'll play here again this season.Location: Springfield, PA
Cost: $48 during the week, weekend about $59 (both with carts). See above to save money on greens fees.
Rating/Slope: 69/127 (From the tips)
Proshop: Yes and it has everything you would need if you forget something.
Range: No driving range but does have a green near the first tee box.
My Score: 91
Play
Again: Yes, I would play here again.

Notes: As I mentioned above, there is no water on the course so buy or bring your own. Watch for forced carry shots and be sure you have the right club. There is not shortage of OB on the course, especially on the back. The par 5's are short and mostly reachable in two with a good drive and an iron. The pace can be a little slow, so if it's busy, be patient.
